A couple who both have cerebral palsy and cannot walk unaided has defied doctors by proving they can raise their beloved baby girl. When Sarah Redmile and her boyfriend James Ellis announced they were expecting a child, doctors doubted they were fit to become parents. James, 25, relies on a wheelchair to get around whereas Sarah, 24, walks with the help of crutches. Both of them have cerebral palsy, though the condition does not get worse with age and life expectancy is usually unaffected. They were overjoyed to find out Sarah was pregnant and, after 10 years of being together, the childhood sweethearts said they knew they’d give the child the best start in life. But when they went to see a healthcare professional, they were shocked and upset to be told they wouldn’t be able to raise a child.
