Across the world up to 1.2 billion people live with some sort of disability, it is estimated. That’s equivalent to the population of China. In the UK, it is thought that some seven million people of working age have a disability, which all adds up to an awful lot of spending power. Latest figures from the UK’s Department of Work and Pensions estimate that this spending power, the so-called “purple pound”, is worth £249bn to the economy. So what should businesses be doing to try to get a share of this money? That’s what we’ll be asking during Disability Works week from the BBC’s business and economics unit. We’ll be looking at how businesses work with people with disabilities and how disabled people have made business work for them. Challenging stereotypes I gradually began to lose my eyesight when I was in my teens so I understand the difficulties for disabled people getting into work. I’ve been a producer in the BBC’s business and economics unit for nearly nine years. I’m keen to

Where is the antiwar movement today?

I’ve heard it said recently that people care more about Star Wars than they do about real wars, and sadly, this rings true as a condemnation of modern society. People just don’t seem to care about peace.

Somehow, the powers that be have been able to push the horrors of war from the front page and out of the evening news so that we don’t think too much about it. They’ve made it so that we don’t see the caskets of our soldiers arriving home by cargo plane. They’ve made it so that war correspondents are embedded as part of the military and thereby so dependent and so awestruck by the task of soldiering that they dare not report objectively. They’ve managed to create a world where war is the health of the state.

2016 marked the most terribly divisive election…

Life under siege in Syria

ALEPPO, Syria — There weren’t any bombs today, or the day before. That’s good, because it means you can leave your apartment, see your friends, try to pretend life is normal. Still, you don’t know when the attacks will resume or how much worse they’ll be when they do.

The war here has been going on for more than four years. Hundreds of thousands of people have fled, and thousands more are dead, including many of my friends. My wife and I are among about 250,000 people trapped here in the besieged eastern section of the city. If you want to stay alive in Aleppo, you have to find a way to keep yourself safe from explosions and starvation.
