I don’t think the incredible news that we have won this campaign has quite sunk in for me yet. The enormity of what this means most certainly hasn’t quite sunk in, but I am simply over the moon. Lowering the bowel cancer screening age by 10 years, to 50 means that thousands of lives will be saved. It is as simple as that. I can’t thank you all enough for your constant support, we wouldn’t be here without every single one of you! Your beautiful messages and comments since the news broke have had me in constant tears- happy tears I may add, so thank you also for those! I have a few more updates before I will close this petition, but I am considering opening a facebook page in order to update you all on when screening at 50 will be implemented, as this is a top priority now. The news that the screening age is being lowered is simply incredible (and I still can’t quite believe we’be done it!!), but time is of the essence. Thousands more people will be denied this screening if it takes too long to implement. Do let me know in the comments section if you would like to be updated on a facebook page.
I was interviewed on BBC Radio Sussex this morning, and am still very keen to get the word out and raise awareness of bowel cancer. No more British stiff upper lip, there is nothing embarrassing in talking about something as important as bowel cancer. I will also stress once again, if you already have this screening available to you, please please do it! The uptake of bowel cancer screening is low, which considering it could save your life, is frankly unbelievable. If you are currently 60 or above, please complete and send back your screening kits, and to all those in their 50’s or soon to be, please when the oppprtunity arises, take part in this screening. Do it for my Mum, and for all those that missed out on the chance to be screened for bowel cancer in their 50’s.

Today’s demo started rather hurriedly and to be honest I didn’t know if I was coming or going. This feeling was amplified because it was cold, rainy and my daughter was a bit fed up. understandable of course. But she soon settled down into our usual routine and all was well.
We are seeing a lot of new faces due to Stalybridge Jobcentre shutting. They don’t know us and what we are doing, and we don’t know them or their situations either. So we have to start from scratch, which at times isn’t easy. But it’s a whole lot harder for them.

Disability Employment Gap 2015. Source: UK Parliament.
The Work and Pensions Committee has launched an inquiry into the Government’s commitment to halve the “disability employment gap.” According to the most recent data, 46.7% of disabled people were in work at the end of 2015 compared to 80.3% of non-disabled people. In order to close this gap, the Committee says an extra 1.2 million disabled people would need to be supported into work.
The Committee’s welfare to workreport, published in October 2015, raised concerns about the lack of success of existing employment programmes in supporting disabled people into sustained employment.
The Government has since announced:
- A new Work and Health Programme to replace the current generalist Work Programme and specialist disability Work Choice programmes
- A real terms increase in spending on the Access to Work Programme, which provides practical support for disabled people, beyond the “reasonable adjustments”…

Karen’s campaign to prevent motorists parking on tactile crossings [Karen’s Blog] – 15 Feb 2016
Transport for London (TfL) has launched a campaign to highlight the rights of assistance dog owners when using private hire vehicles. By law private hire drivers must accept a passenger with an accredited assistance dog and at no extra cost on their fare. The campaign, which is specifically targeting the private hire trade, seeks to educate drivers and operators on their obligations and to highlight to passengers with assistance dogs the rights they have, including that their dogs must be allowed in the passenger compartment with the owner. The campaign comes as TfL is taking action to prosecute drivers that do not comply with the law. In the last six months, TfL has successfully prosecuted five drivers and three operators for refusing to take assistance dogs, has eight prosecutions pending and is currently investigating eight more cases. More than 7,000 people are assisted by dogs trained and accredited by the seven charities that come under the Assistance Dogs UK umbrella
