Speculation reached fever pitch this morning that a group of Labour MPs are about to quit the party.
Key figures believed to be on the verge of leaving, including prominent MP Chuka Umunna, did not respond to requests for comment.
And it is understood Mr Umunna is linked to an event on the “future of British politics” that will be held in Westminster from 10am today.
Persistent rumours have suggested between four and six Labour MPs were considering splitting off from the party.
A shadow minister told the Mirror today they’d heard that “the handful of MPs who had planned to split on Valentine’s Day will go this morning.”
“But this ‘it’s this week’, ‘it’s today’, ‘it’s next week’ has been rumbling on since Christmas so I take with a pinch of salt,” the shadow minister added.
