Trump’s Achievements in a nutshell!

Not even a week as gone, but Trump is causing problems that we may never recover from, America what have you done.

Opher's World

These seem to be some of the main proposals:

  1. To bring back torture
  2. To intensify the war in the Middle East (a second war on terror? – didn’t the first one spawn ISIS?)
  3. To alienate Iran
  4. To build a pipeline regardless of environmental impact and treaties with the native Americans
  5. To tear up environmental treaties – denying climate change, environment destruction and pollution
  6. To do away with Health Care for poorer people
  7. To do away with legislation on health and safety, work standards and pollution
  8. To reinvigorate dirty polluting industries (coal, oil, gas, fracking ……)
  9. To bully Mexico and start a trade war so he can say they paid for the wall
  10. To ban Muslims from a number of countries from entering America
  11. To build a wall
  12. To tear up trade deals
  13. To ban all forms of protest and marches
  14. To bully the media, call them liars and brand the media…

The Reasons for Brexit, Trump and the rise of Fascism

Opher's World

There has been a huge swing towards extreme Right-wing policies in Europe and the USA. We have the re-emergence of the Ku Klux Klan and White supremacists, heartened by the election of Trump, we have the resurgence of Fascist parties in France, Austria and Holland and left-wing/centralist governments being under threat from right-wing groups, emboldened by the potential break-up of the EU. In Britain we have had Brexit and now have the most right-wing government since Thatcher. Labour is trailing 20 points behind in the polls. Things look dire.

So what has gone wrong for the whole dream of equality and liberalisation? Is it over? What about empathy, compassion and equality?

Well if we are going to get back to a compassionate liberal society we have to look at the reasons why people have turned to fascists like Trump and believed the lies of Boris, Gove and May. Things have…

When it goes wrong they blame it on the staff or suggest even more expensive…

Castro dead – It is somehow fitting.

Why can not humans be content with their own life, why should they interfer with the lives of others, especially when there has been no request to do so.

This has been evident from the start of time, by wishing to have what is not theirs, the abuse of power, the need to seek adventure, the desire to control, to possess for should we not be content with what we have. Is it not better to give than take?

But then is giving always right for there is giving and there is giving.

When the Western World took on Christianity, did we not wish to give this to others, whether they wished to receive it or not. When we set forth to find and explore the New World, did we understand what we were doing or going to do. We went to explore, but in doing so did we not invade, decimate the native inhabitants and impose our will, culture and beliefs on them. Then where there was resistance we would kill, maim and suppress the will of the people and eventually enslave them and we called this progress, but for whom.

Opher's World

Following the visits of the Rolling Stones and President Obama it seems fitting that Fidel Castro should bow out. It is the end of an era.

Fidel was a benevolent dictator. There were lots of good things about him and some bad.

He ran a left-wing, one-party State that was opposed by the USA who tried everything in their power to bring him down. They applied a stringent (and illegal?) trade embargo and attempted to undermine and disrupt his administration in much the same way that they had done in Chile, Argentina and Brazil. Unlike with those countries they did not succeed. Castro survived invasion and 8 assassination attempts.

On the positive side, despite the isolation, he ran a successful economy. He did not flout his position and live in luxury like a billionaire creaming off all the wealth. He lived modestly. The country had a superb health and education…

Billy Bragg – It Says Here – Lyrics about the media – Can we have democracy if the information we are fed is false?

True, and it should be said that there will always be two sides to every story, but is it only two sides or could it be more?

Opher's World

In order for people to be able to make decisions on important issues and electable candidates it is necessary to have access to unbiased information. Failing that it is important to have information from different sides of the argument with a clear knowledge of what the bias is.

Unfortunately this is far from the case. All our information in the media is biased towards the establishment. Information on the web comes from a number of dubious sources for a variety of reasons.

Our newspapers are owned by exceedingly rich individuals and feed us with a pile of lies, exaggerations and rubbish. They would prefer that we do not think about issues at all and concentrate on celebrity nonsense, fashion, trivia, Royals and sex. What they do put out is strongly biased to feed us the story they want us to believe.

The BBC has a reputation for being objective. This is…

How can you have democracy with a biased media?

True, but then what is the truth, is that just subjective?

We can only know what is true when we witness our own actions, but then can we believe our own mind, for is our present and future not influenced by our past?

Opher's World

Our views are formed from the information we are provided with.
If we are constantly provided with news that is heavily slanted while claiming to be impartial then we are being manipulated.
How do we know what is true?

Quotes – Bertrand Russell – One of my favourite people!

Opher's World

Bertie was a philosopher who spoke it like it was. What he said always made sense.

Fear is the main source of superstition, and one of the main sources of cruelty. To conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom.
That makes sense to me. Fear of death is the main reason people are religious – fear of hell – fear of god. Not for me. Our destruction of nature has a lot to do with our fear of creatures and natural events. We seek to tame it.
The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.
How true is that? The stupid always think they know while the clever know enough to be sure that it is never black and white.
Most people would sooner die than think; in fact, they do so.
The sheeple rule. Maybe people should have to…

Donald Trump – Who will pay for this orchestrated outpouring of hatred and emotion?

Opher's World

Featured Image -- 12714

Is this really politics?

When a crowd is baited into hysterical emotional outbursts of hate can that be politics? Who will pay in the long run? Is this healthy for the country to foster such hatred and division?

Surely politics should be about presenting a series of policies and arguing why they are the best options. Surely it should be a cerebral process of debating and weighing up which is the best philosophy for the country?

The USA process seems to be one of demonising, taunting and creating monsters out of the opposition. Seemingly Hilary Clinton is a liar who supports the devil. She should be locked up.

The audience is exhorted to hate in what looks remarkably like a scene out of George Orwell’s 1984. I find it frightening. The emotions are so high it breaks out into violence.

After all the dust has settled what will be the…

The Dilemma for the Labour Party.

Is it time to go for the benefit of the Labour Party?

Opher's World

The Labour Party is in a dilemma.

The parliamentary party is overwhelmingly opposed to Jeremy Corbyn and his policies (vote of no confidence 172/40). The MPs are moderate watered down Tories.

The grassroots of the Labour Party are in favour of Jeremy (60/40).

The Trade Unions are in favour of Jeremy.

The wider electorate are lukewarm at best.

The media are extremely antagonistic.

The dilemma is whether to stick with Jeremy and his principles and find themselves unelectable or to drop Jeremy and move to the centre with the parliamentary MPs (watered down Tories) and become more electable.

My dilemma is this:

I support Jeremy and his policies

I cannot see how he can put together a credible cabinet with such little support from MPs.

I was unimpressed with his lacklustre performance during the referendum campaign

I do not think he manages the media well.

I do not see the charisma and…
