These authorities can then contract to Care Service Providers on an increased rate so they can then pay their care workers at least the Living Wage, currently 9.00 per hour, outside of London, London being 10.55 per hour.

This petition is just the start as is paying all care workers the Living Wage, for good quality care needs to be achieved in all instances of care and then be sustained .

I am involved in a Petition project based on the Care Workers within the Care Industry.

 

This industry is in crisis, as is the Health Service, but within Social Care this crisis is even greater. This in turn will create even more pressure on all aspects of the Health Service. Therefore, action is needed to minimise the Social Care crisis and pay paid carers a reasonable wage is one of these actions, so there is now a petition.

We all know that there is a major crisis in Social Care not just in Sheffield, but all over the UK. This is in a large part due to the lack of persons willing to come into the Care Industry, of which the low pay is a prime factor.

The care sector needs to recruit 128,000 new workers each year to replace those who retire or leave, new research has found.

The study (http://careassociationalliance.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Care-Association-Alliance-Social-care-Workforce-Analysis-2018.pdf) by the Care Association Alliance and law firm Royds Withy King found that one in three workers leave the sector every year – the highest turnover rate of all job sectors in the UK.

Calls to increase pay for care staff-The elephant in the room is that you can be paid more for stacking shelves | Care Industry News

Mr Kreft said the nub of the problem was that the funding formulas of local councils and health boards were predicated on paying low wages to staff and the “minimal differentials” for taking on extra responsibilities – and that had to change.

The call from Mario Kreft MBE, the chair of Care Forum Wales, came after a campaign was launched to attract another 20,000 social care workers in Wales over the next 10 years.

At the moment, he said, the funding formulas of local councils and health boards were predicted on paying low wages to staff.

The number of elderly people over the age of 80 is predicted to increase by 44% in Wales by 2030 and there are currently about 113,000 people in the social care sector.

The ageing population in Wales and relatively older workforce are two factors for the increasing demand for care workers in people’s own homes, workers in residential care and more nurses.

Mr Kreft said: “I can certainly say that this is the most challenging time that social care providers have faced in trying to recruit sufficient workers to actually do the job.

Former DWP boss reveals how Tories ‘forced’ her to quit her job

Again the DWP are guilty of harassment, but this time not just benefit claimants, but also their own staff. Should we be surprised, I believe no, for it appears, very strongly, that the DWP is all about harassment and they are n ot concerned about to whom. Now that is the real worry, for it shows that this policy is evident through the system, a system, which appears and could well be ‘not fit for purpose’, but it is without the benefit of accountability.

Is it that ‘Brexit’ is taking all the time and and the Governments ability to run the country, or is Brexit, just the latest excuse, I feel the latter, so there is no hope, for especially people who are or are becoming vulnerable because of the system and how it is being administered. That, as I have sais, is very worrying as it implies that the harassment is embedded in the Government and the DWP and possibly many other or even all of the Government departments or sections.

What can be done, well the public needs to make their feelings known, in any way possible.

One means is partaking in petitions, of which there are currently very many, but that is because the need for them is many.

I am well aware that there are other areas of concern as I am heavily involved with Social Care and its relationship to health.

Brexit is but one of the areas of concern, austerity is also a main concern. Certainly with it impact on Local Authorities whose finances have been decimated during this Governments tenure.

I am involved on a daily basis with my Local Authority in Sheffield, so I do know how it is and how austerity is affecting the Care Industry.

It is because of that, I am supporting the Petition – Pay all employed carers the Living Wage

New campaign to recruit thousands more adult social care staff – GOV.UK | Carer Voice

A new national recruitment campaign to help fill the 110,000 vacancies in the adult social care sector has launched.

The ‘Every Day Is Different’ campaign will show how rewarding social care careers can be – 96% of care professionals feel their work makes a difference to people’s lives. It will also highlight the opportunities for progression and professional development.

The campaign aims to:

• attract new people with the right values to the sector and increase interest in adult social care as a vocation
• highlight the range of job roles, with an initial focus on direct care roles such as care workers, where there is the most demand
• equip the social care sector with the marketing tools to support the campaign and advice to recruit and retain the right people, to address a high turnover rate.

Over 1.45 million people work in the sector at the moment. It is predicted an additional 650,000 workers will be needed by 2035 to keep up with the rising numbers of people aged 65 and over.

Working in adult social care is about providing personal and practical support to help people live their lives.

People who work in the sector could be supporting the elderly or people with a physical disability, autism, dementia or a mental health condition. This could mean working in:

• a care or nursing home as a care worker
• your local community as an activities co-ordinator
• a hospital as an occupational therapist
• someone’s home as a personal assistant

The campaign has been developed in close collaboration with the adult social care sector and will run during February and March through social media, digital and local radio advertising, outdoor posters and events across England.

Advertising will feature real care workers and the people they support. The aim is to attract a diverse range of people, but the campaign will have a focus on people aged 20 to 39. Research suggests that this group is the most likely to consider a role in adult social care in the next 12 months.

Government launches recruitment drive for adult social care – ITV News | Carer Voice

The Government has launched a recruitment campaign to try to plug a hole of 110,000 vacancies in the social care workforce.

More than 1.45 million people work in social care at the moment, but an extra 650,000 workers will be needed by 2035 due to an ageing population, ministers said.

The move was welcomed by charities but they said more needed to be done to improve working conditions and pay.

The new campaign – Every Day Is Different – also comes as the Health Foundation published its own report on the NHS workforce, expressing concerns about the growing number of staff shortages across the board.

Social care is a hugely important service on which many depend and more needs to be done to make it an attractive career

It said there were “worrying trends” in community care, with a drop in nurses and health visitors in the community.

The new Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) campaign aims to promote social care as a career with good progression and professional development.

Social Care in Crisis | Carer Voice

Due to years of austerity cuts to Local Authorities, these authorities are having to spread more thinly, each year the amount of money they have all over the many areas of their responsibilities and Social Care is one of those areas.

But each year with an aging population and more persons with disabilities living longer, the people needing Social Care is increasing while the money available to help care for these needs is reducing.

In addition there is an increasing need for employed carers to provide the care the people with these needs require. But there is a shortage of people wishing to come into care and why is this?

The rate of pay within the care industry is abysmal for most employed carers receive a wage based on the *National Living Wage, currently £7.83, which will increase to £8.21 on the first of April 2019.

While the Living Wage is £9.00.

Being an employed carer is more than, cleansing, washing, dressing and meal preparation, as they are, in many instances, one of the few people that the people with care need see.

Also there could be instances where the employed carer needs to deal with financial responsibilities, provide emotional support, manage prescriptions and administer medication, monitor Safeguarding and many more areas of responsibility and paying just the National Living Wage is not sufficient to cover all these responsibilities.

It is therefore, that the Living Wage would be more near a level to pay, but Local Authorities do not have the finance to pay this, currently and therefore this current Government needs to take this on board and increase the funding to Local Authorities.

With this in mind, FLASh (Families Lobbying and Advising Sheffield) have created an EPetition, Pay All Employed Carers the Living Wage.
